The Hazards of Water Damage to Your Home

While nobody ever wants to return home to a flooded property, the hazards of water damage extend far beyond just what meets the eye. Yes, any type of home flood has likely caused damage to personal belongings and building materials, many of which will need to be removed, discarded and replaced. But there are other notable hazards aside from just this that must be considered in any water damage situation. Here’s a look at three things you also need to be aware of:

  • Mold: Mold can begin to grow anywhere from 24 to 48 hours in the right conditions – and certainly a water damage situation can serve as ground zero for this sort of growth. Mold doesn’t just weaken structural materials and potentially ruin porous materials, but it can also lead to health issues. Such health issues can range from minor, such as increased allergic reactions, to major, such as breathing issues.
  • Asbestos: Water damage also has the potential to disturb asbestos-containing materials. Asbestos is a common ingredient in building products, notably in floor tiles, ceiling tiles and insulation. When left alone, it poses no harm. But if it is disturbed, which may be the case in a water damage situation, the small asbestos fibers can become airborne and may be inhaled. Asbestos can lead to a myriad of cancers and breathing issues from exposure.
  • Structural issues: Finally, a big hazard when it comes to water damage is structural issues. If not treated promptly or properly, water damage can lead to the likes of wood rot, flooring damage and more – all things that can seriously impact a home’s structural integrity. It’s a big part of why water damage needs to be addressed fast by a qualified professional in order to get the property restored to pre-loss condition.
