The Three Leading Causes of the Need for Water Damage Restoration

While water damage caused by flooding from severe weather, heavy rainfall or wind-driven rain commonly requires restoration, you might be surprised to learn that Mother Nature actually isn’t among the leading factors behind such services. That’s right – while storms and floods often necessitate the need for water damage restoration services, there are actually three other instances that are more commonly associated with it. Here’s a closer look:

Top 3 Causes of Water Damage

  • Plumbing problems: Whether it’s a frozen pipe that breaks in a basement crawl space or a malfunctioning pipe in general, issues with home plumbing are one of the most common causes of water damage. What’s more is that since many pipes are inside walls, this water damage can sometimes be difficult to detect. Look for water marks on the drywall, listen for strange noises or dripping that could be coming from the pipes and take note if you come across any musky odors anywhere in the home.
  • Toilet troubles: Toilet troubles can lead to water damage in a few ways. One, there’s the issue of a clogged toilet, where water overflows from the bowl, spilling onto the floor and potentially even out of the bathroom. There’s also the issue of an incorrectly installed toilet, which could be leaking water below. Each can lead to substantial water damage.
  • Washing machine mishaps: If a washing machine is being overused or has been filled too high, extensive pressure can be put on the hose, possibly forcing it to bust. When this occurs, water will spew out everywhere. Another common issue with washing machines is the drain hose, which is usually placed to discharge used water into a nearby sink. These hoses can become dislodged fairly easily, again potentially spewing water everywhere.
