Your Home Appliances CAN Cause Water Damage

When you think of the leading causes of water damage, severe weather and heavy rainfall likely comes to mind. After all, severe weather in the United States accounts for several billions worth of damage each year. Yes, storms and heavy rains are often responsible for this type of damage, but make no mistake about it – they’re not the only cause of water damage. Some threats to water damage are right inside your home: your water-using appliances. Here’s a closer look at some of these appliances that have the potential to cause significant water damage:

  • Washing machines: Busted or errant hose? Clogged drain? Washing machine issues can range from small leaks to the widespread dispersing of water. Neither situation is ideal, which makes it important to identify the source immediately and have it – and any water damaged it caused – handled accordingly.
  • Refrigerators: Does your refrigerator have a built-in ice maker? Pay attention to the hose that taps into the water line to bring it the water to make ice. If this comes loose or disconnects, it can lead to a flooded mess.
  • Hot water tanks: Hot water tanks usually only last for 7-10 years and are often prone to a variety of issues. Faulty valves or a corroded tank bottom can all cause water to flow out of it and freely in the area where it is located. That’s why it’s largely recommended to have your hot water tank inspected and flushed out every so often to avoid the sediment buildup that can cause so many issues.
  • Toilets: Toilets have the potential to cause some serious water damage, mostly due to the fact that they can keep on running and spewing out water. This may go undetected for hours by homeowners.

If you’re ever in a situation where you’ve discovered that one of your home appliances has caused water damage in your home, the first thing you should do is turn the water off to the appliance. Then, you should call a water damage restoration professional so that your property can quickly be restored to pre-loss condition. Attempting to correct water damage yourself could make matters worse and lead to subsequent mold and mildew growth.
